Urnes Stave Church was built about 1130 and is the oldest in the country. In 1979 the Stave Church was included in UNESCO's World Heritage list.
The church's architecture, history and style are quite unique and it is a cornerstone of Norway's cultural heritage.
Urnes Stave Church enjoys a beautiful natural setting in the Luster district of Sogn. The church's ornamentation is very interesting and can be dated back to 1050-1100, which indicates that much of it originally came from an earlier building.
The so-called Urnes style takes its name from Urnes Stave Church. The hallmark of the style is its beautiful carvings of very high quality. One can hire a boat or drive along the Sognefjord to reach Urnes Stave Church, which lies at Ornes in the district of Luster. Full or half day tour.
